Jim Stanford doesn't tip
http://www.rabble.ca/politics.shtml?sh_itm=eed7bf8fd05753c8aacbe5b81d4fedf1&rXn=1
Wednesday, November 08, 2006
A tip of the hat for those who serve Down Under is an article about how Jim doesn't tip in Australia.
Like me, until last week, he was being a Canadian leftist in Melbourne. I hope he is enjoying himself and the not tipping. I'd still recommend a little something here and there, but don't try your usual 20% from home.
Last week I finished up 7 months working for the union that represents Hospitality workers (LHMU) and I can tell you that when Jim says "if Australia's current right-wing government has its way, their restaurants will soon look more like Canada's" it is a dramatic understatement. John Howard's attack on the industrial system is far-reaching and evil. Have a look at the award (like a collective agreement for the whole industry) that covers the Hospitality industry. This is the wage rates section, divide amounts by 38 hours to get the hourly rate (these all go up about $27 on December 1). We're not talking incredible wages. But they are living wages. Now look at the section on penalty rates and imagine losing these from your wage rates.
More about the Australian Labor[sic] movement and its enemies later.

Why I hate Windows
Wednesday, November 08, 2006

I know, there are more blog posts in the world about why people hate windows than there are blogs (and we all know there are too many of those).
But.. given my previous post about how I love Pico..
Let's look at screen shot of what happens when I install a simple text based email reader on my windows box.. yup you guessed it, that's a Not Responding in the corner. I locked up my windows box with a text email client. Bleh.

Why I Love Pico
Wednesday, November 08, 2006
Pico (text editor) is my favourite. I like it better than wordpad, notepad, word, openoffice, wordperfect, emacs and pretty much anything else you can put word process with.
Ok.. this post isn't really about why I love Pico. This is just a post saying that I do love Pico.
I'm a simple person, with simple desires and yet, I am the master of these simple things. Let's tell the truth.. I'm blowing my own horn here but, I'm good at Pico. I even like Pine.
I'm going to go compile them on my windows box...
I know I need a real job.

A New Global Union Federation
Wednesday, November 08, 2006
On November 1, 2006 working people all over the world received a new voice of democratic representation and organizing. Check it out: ITUC-CSI-IGB - International Trade Union Confederation
"The Confederation is inspired by the profound conviction that organisation in democratic and independent trade unions and collective bargaining are crucial to achieving the well-being of working people and their families and to security, social progress and sustainable development for all."
Already the ITUC-CSI-IGB "represents 168 million workers in 154 countries and territories and has 306 national affiliates."
Yay!

Goodbye Rumsfeld!
Wednesday, November 08, 2006
As we say a political goodbye finally to Rummy, let's take a moment to remember something about Rumsfeld from his earlier positions.
1. As Nixon said in 1971 ".. at least Rummy is tough enough" and "He's a ruthless little bastard. You can be sure of that."[5]
2. After Nixon resigned it was Rusmfeld's job to head the transition to Gerald Ford and he was the White House Chief of Staff thereafter from 1974-75.
3. Shortly thereafter one Frank Olson was allegedly dosed with LSD without his knowledge and committed suicide. It has been further alleged that Olson tried to resign from his position as a CIA doctor and this was his punishment. It was Rumsfeld's responsibility to cover this up. I wonder whether anyone will spike the cool aid at Rumsfeld's going away party?
4. Rumsfeld was heavily responsible for strategic support for Saddam Hussein during the Iran - Iraq war in 1983-1984.
He said it: "These events occurred on my watch as secretary of defense. I am accountable for them."
Let the war crimes tribunal begin.

Useful tools..
Wednesday, November 08, 2006
I'm always amazed when people tell me they have problems with Spam or they don't know what Skype is, or they have never heard of myspace.com/friendster/orkut/hyves/hi-5 or they can't join a union.
So for those of you who are having trouble with any of the above here are my simple tips:
1. Spam: Use Gmail and forward your old accounts e-mail there. Let Gmail ditch your spam for you. You don't have to change your e-mail address. In fact you can forward all your e-mail addresses and even send as if it came from them. E-mail me at morganstewart@gmail.com for more deets.
2. Skype: is free phoning. Go get it, NOW: Skype. You don't need to know anything more than that. If you do.. RTFM.
3. Just search for me on these crappy social networking sites.. you'll find me... or someone else. myspace.com/friendster/orkut/hyves/hi-5
4. A recent Australian survey motivated the ACTU (Canada's CLC equivalent) to set-up a one stop join a union shop. In Australia just call: 1300 4 UNION or go to: http://www.actu.asn.au/work_rights/tools_resources/JoinAUnion.html In Canada it can be more complicated.. but try: CanadianLabour.ca or check the white pages for your local Labour Council. Even try asking some union member you know..
Don't give up.. if you want to be in a union -- keep asking until you are.
